Baldur’s Gate 3 – Should You Help The Emperor Mind Flayer

You’ll meet many interesting characters in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Emperor is just one of them, and there’s one particularly surprising revelation that sets the scene. Our guide explains whether or not you should help the Emperor Mind Flayer in Baldur’s Gate 3, and the results of your decisions. Also, remember that this guide contains spoilers.

Should you help the Emperor Mind Flayer in Baldur’s Gate 3?

We all know not to trust the Illithids or the Mind Flayers. But, you will have a particular dilemma during Act 3. This is when you meet the Emperor Mind Flayer of Baldur’s Gate 3, and he asks you to save him.

The Githyanki Ambush

Upon reaching Wyrm’s Crossing and resting in the outpost, your party will be attacked by Githyanki monks. Several will appear and they will hit hard. Worse, you have to reach the portal in three turns. Otherwise, anyone who has a tadpole in their brain will be completely controlled by the Absolute. They will transform into the Mind Flayer, which will lead to a game over.

Ideally, you’ll want to eliminate at least a few enemies to clear your way. Likewise, if you have characters with high mobility, like a monk or a spellcaster with Misty Step, you need to get as close to the portal as quickly as possible. Once a tadpole-infested character touches the portal, you will be sent to the Astral Plane. You survived… at least for now.

It is imperative that a character reach the portal in three turns.

The astral plane: to help the emperor or not

Upon reaching the Astral Plane, you must eliminate a few enemies. Then, once you head towards the large skull in the center, the Emperor will approach you since his domain is overrun. Now comes the choice of whether or not to help the Emperor Mind Flayer of Baldur’s Gate 3.

What happens if you attack the emperor

In short: it’s a game over. You need the living Emperor, because he’s actually the only one to keep you from being completely corrupted by the Absolute. If you fight him, you’ll face his Intellect Devourer brain creatures, as well as the Githyanki invaders. Even if you take it out, it still leads to the same cutscene where your character’s body shatters as a new Mind Flayer is born.

If you fail to reach the portal in time, or if you kill the Emperor, you will become a Mind Flayer.

What if you help the emperor

If you aid the Emperor, you only fight Githyanki enemies. There are four in the area, including one that is higher up on a ledge. Intellect Devourers are there to help you, even if they don’t have enough HP. Still, you should be able to win the battle without much hassle.

After helping the Emperor in Baldur’s Gate 3, it is revealed that he is actually the Dream Lover/Guardian who visits you at night. He was once an adventurer, and while he didn’t take an arrow to the knee, he did take a tadpole in the eye.

He managed to wrest control of his being to live as an advisor to a duke. Unfortunately, one of the villains, Gortash, revealed his true identity and he has been imprisoned in the Astral Plane ever since. Also, you realize that the Githyanki trapped in the core is Prince Orpheus, the son of the goddess Gith. Its imprisonment retains the hold of the Absolute on your mind.
