While in the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll likely hear about a True Soul named Nere from various sources. Nere isn’t the nicest of guys, to say the least, and he’s wanted by the Myconid colony for crimes against their people as well as some Duergar for unpaid debts. Regardless of how you heard of Nere, your map will point you in the direction of the Grymforge in the Underdark, where Nere was trapped via a cave-in.
The gnome slaves work to get the True Soul out quickly, as there’s poisonous gas in the room he’s trapped in and he doesn’t have much time left. If you manage to clear the collapse without harming any of the gnomes, Nere will emerge and tempt you, offering to partner with him. However, you might also have an obligation to the Myconid colony or others at Grymforge to take its lead. This guide will show both sides of the decision as well as how to free Nere in the first place.
Free Nere from the collapse of the Grymforge
There are several ways to clear the rocks that trap Nere in the poison gas chamber. The main method is to use a Runepowder or Smokepowder satchel and blast the rocks. You can receive Runepowder from Philomeen, who is at the northern end of the Grymforge. You need to go around the docks near the Grymforge waypoint, open the door near where two Duergar are dumping bodies in the water, then past the Ooze enemies and down a steep path to reach Philomeen.

Once you’re in the room with her, you need to pass some checks to make sure you’re not a real true soul. If you do, Philomeen will point out how much she dislikes True Souls and let you take a vial of Runepowder. With him you can return to the collapse. However, we recommend speaking with Elder Brtithvar first, who can be found just outside the collapse zone near a few steps. Speaking with the elder will reveal that they need Nere to pay his debts and are willing to go against their clan to get what is theirs. This will allow you to use the Elder’s rebellion forces if you choose to side with Nere.

To detonate the collapse, throw the vial of rune powder at the rocks, but make sure the gnomes aren’t nearby. You can place a bomb on the ground near the rocks to knock them back to a safe distance. If you want to get to the point where you have to make a decision, you need to make sure no one gets hurt when you detonate the collapse. Harming a Gnome or Duergar will make everyone hostile once Nere is freed. If you follow these steps, Nere will be free, and now it’s decision time.
Take Nere’s side or take his head
Once Nere is free, he will viciously attack a gnome slave and then talk to you. After a few dialogues, you must decide if you want to attack Nere or choose to side with him.

Siding with him means you’re also siding with the loyal Duergar, and you’ll immediately fight the forces of Elder Brithvar. This also means that you will go against the Myconid colony, as you will not return to them with Nere’s head as they requested. In our opinion, this is not the morally right thing to do, as Nere and the Duergar keep gnome slaves and are loyal to the Absolute.
As such, if you decide to go against Nere, Elder Brithvar will step in and declare his rebellion against him and the rest of the Duergar. A fight will break out, but this time you are fighting Nere and the non-rebel Duergar soldiers. After your victory and Nere’s death, you will be able to convince Elder Brithvar to free the slaves and you will earn a considerable amount of gold. This will permanently wipe out the Grymforge, which is what most players will want to see.
Of course, if you’re playing as an evil or chaotic character, then siding with Nere makes the most sense. The choice is ultimately yours, but taking Nere’s head will allow you to complete the Myconid Colony and Grymforge questlines. There is also more gold and reward for you if you kill Nere. Elder Brithvar gives you gold for aiding his rebellion, and the Myconid will grant you several rewards by delivering Nere’s head.
