West Ham saw a £40m bid for Chelsea and England midfielder Conor Gallagher rejected.
The 23-year-old has two years left on his contract and it is believed that Chelsea would be willing to extend it.
Any potential departure would likely have to be driven by Gallagher himself, with West Ham believed to be weighing whether to accept an improved offer.
The England midfielder is on Chelsea’s tour of the United States and scored in the 4-3 win over Brighton on Sunday. As things stand, boss Mauricio Pochettino expects him to join the squad next season.
Sky Sports News understands that Chelsea value him well over £40m.
Who else do West Ham plan to replace Rice?
Gallagher is one of several midfielders West Ham are considering following Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal for £105m. They would ideally like to sign two replacements for the position.
West Ham have had initial talks with Manchester United over signing Scott McTominay, but early suggestions are that there is a gap in the Scotland international’s valuation.
Sky Sports News Man Utd have been told they consider McTominay a top player and a very important member of the team. For them to even consider a sale, it would take a “really big offer”.
West Ham are expected to push to sign Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. The interest in the midfielder is long-standing and dates back to before this summer’s transfer window.
The Hammers also had a £45m bid rejected by Fulham for Joao Palhinha and remain keen on Juventus’ Denis Zakaria, Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana and Ajax’s Edson Alvarez.
West Ham among clubs monitoring Maguire situation
Harry Maguire is being watched closely by clubs in the Premier League and abroad, with West Ham among those interested in the England international.
The Hammers are believed to be exploring the option of a loan or permanent deal for the 30-year-old defender, who was recently told he will no longer be Man Utd captain and may look to move elsewhere.
However, they are aware that wages could be an issue should a deal be reached between the clubs.
United manager Erik ten Hag has always maintained that any decision will indeed rest with the player, who is contracted to the club until the summer of 2025.
