THE Destiny 2 Wicked Instrument the scout rifle is the latest Exotic weapon to arrive in Season of the Deep, and as expected, it’s season-bound deep dive activity. Wicked Implement’s perks are pretty cool with scout rifles; it slows enemies with quick precision hits and creates stasis shards that reload the gun if you kill an enemy while doing so.
How you get Wicked Implement is a bit different compared to previous Exotic missions like Seraph’s Shield and Avalon. The whole thing is a time trial of encounters that must first be unlocked by fishing a lot. That said, here’s how to unlock and complete the Whetstone encounter to get the new Destiny 2 Wicked Implement scout rifle.
How to Enable Whetstone Encounter
The Whetstone encounter is part of the Deep Dive activity, but you need to meet a few requirements before you can activate it. Although I detail the process in depth in my exotic fish guide, here is a brief summary of what you need to do:
- Catch the unique exotic fish of Nessus, Savathun’s Throne World, and the EDZ.
- Dip them into the HELM tank to get the Shattered Blades.
- Use the Broken Blades to activate the three Hive Statues in the Deep Dive activity.
The good news is that only one person in your squad must have caught the fish and got the blades. They can activate the statues, which will open the encounter with Whetstone. To access Whetstone, you must complete the first two Deep Dive encounters, then look for an open door on the side of the second encounter room. Inside there are three Hive statues that each fireteam member must activate to lower the barrier so you can begin the encounter.
If you do not have WEAK or a way to get weapons from your vault in an activity, be sure to bring the Divinity trace the rifle if you have it, a Shardwelland a critical point DPS weapon like a Linear Fusion Rifle, as they all make the second boss much easier.
Khul, Executioner Knight
After going through a few underwater sections – watch out for slow mines – and fighting a few enemies, you’ll come across a room where Khul, the Executioner Knight spawns alongside captured minotaurs. The central mechanism of the Whetstone encounter is the Mortal Sharpened buff, and each time you kill one Sharp Minotaurs, your entire squad gets a stack. When you have three stacks of the buff listed on the left side of your screen, you will be able to deal damage to the boss.
After he disappears, go up the stairs in the drowning area and defeat the enemies until the boss spawns in the next room. To open the barrier to the boss, you must shoot the node of darkness in the center of the room, then a second node hidden under the stairs right in front of you. Once in the room, it’s the same as before, except the Sharpened Minotaurs are now protected by barriers. Behind the first pillar on the right you will find a third knot of darkness you can shoot to lower them, allowing you to kill the minotaurs and defeat the boss.
Omen, Blade of the Black Terrace
As mentioned earlier, the Divinity Trace Rifle and a Well of Radiance are very useful for Omen, Blade of the Black Terrace. Omen is a Tormentor whose only critical point is his chest, which makes him very annoying to damage without a Divinity bubble to shoot instead. If you don’t have Divinity, bring at least a well and a critical point DPS weapon like a Linear Fusion Rifle so you can shoot his chest.
This encounter works much the same as the previous one in terms of killing sharp minotaurs and getting stacks of the Deadly Sharp buff – the tricky part is that the boss arena is a bit of a maze and he’s chasing you. Minotaurs usually spawn in three of the four corners of the arena, so as soon as you get down, head left and right under the doors to look for them. If you take enough time, they will be highlighted with a marker so you can find them more easily.
When you’ve killed three, return to the center, use your well, and deal damage until your buff runs out. If you have damaged Omen enough, Sharpened Minotaurs will now spawn in the middle part of the arena around you. Get the Minotaurs’ Deadly Sharp buff again and kill Omen before the timer runs out or before he kills you all, otherwise you’ll be restarted in orbit and have to do the whole deep dive again.
Once Omen is defeated, you can head to the next room and commune with the Statue of Darkness to get your Wicked Implement scout rifle.
Wicked Tool Catalyst
The new Exotic Scout Rifle has a slot for a Catalyst, but players are still trying to figure out how to get it. Usually, an Exotic mission would have a higher difficulty that rewards the catalyst, but completing deep dives at max level with the weapon doesn’t seem to let it down. It’s possible it’s a random drop like many other Catalysts, or there’s a secret challenge we don’t know about yet, like completing Whetstone within a certain amount of time. It also might not be available right now, or something Bungie will add in a future reset.
