Prograis is getting closer and closer to the pocket in this round, looking for a target for his powerful left hand, but he can’t find an opportunity to let it fly. Instead, the fighters circle around for the better part of another three leisurely minutes. The biggest blow of either fighter’s round comes near the end, when Prograis ducks under Zorrilla’s guard and lands a left to the body.

Another quiet ride. Zorrilla was just busy enough, especially in the last half minute. The inaction draws vigorous boos from the crowd for the last minute of the frame. After the bell, Prograis’ corner warns him that Zorrilla is trying to control the pace before stealing the set with flurries of action at the end. And they are absolutely right!

And Prograis throws Zorrilla to the canvas with a heat-seeking left hand to the nose about a minute into the round! Zorrilla beats the count to eight but he could be in trouble! Prograis rushes to finish things off along the ropes, but Zorrilla seems to have been through the worst.

2nd round
Prograis took a break in the first. It was a clear knockdown and the ref narrowly missed it. The second goes at an even slower pace than the first game, but Zorrilla boxes from the outside with confidence, throwing and landing a bit more. A good start for the heavy underdog.

The fighters meet in the center of the ring and start stomping each other with punches: Prograis from a southbox position, Zorrilla orthodox. Neither fight overdoes it midway through the opening round. Prograis throws more punches while Zorrilla seems to time him for a right counter. Zorrilla lands a straight, clean right hand. Then, about 20 seconds from the end, Prograis gets hit with a big left hand and nearly falls! He is able to stay upright grabbing his opponent and then lands a nice right hand on top before the bell. A replay between rounds confirms that he should have been declared knocked down. Officially, however, that was not the case.

The fight was an eliminator for Errol Spence’s WBA welterweight title, which is one of four belts up for grabs in next month’s summit meeting between Spence and Crawford.
