August is one of the weirdest months on the calendar. Looks like it should be early fall; September is RIGHT here, after all. And yet, August is one of the hottest months of the year for many in the United States, a last breath of summer before fall and its traditional television schedule of novelties takes hold.

This year’s fall schedule will look markedly different thanks to strikes by Hollywood’s main actors union and main writers’ guild, but August will still have some fantastic new hits coming to streaming. Warner Bros. Max streaming platform. Discovery is launching new titles in just about every category imaginable, so here are the five we at The Streamable are most excited for!

Young basketball fans don’t remember the Showtime Lakers’ run-and-gun style, but those who were there to see it live know exactly what it was like. “Winning Time” takes fans behind the scenes with a dramatized version of the team, and Season 2 will explore the period between 1980 and 1984 that intensifies the rivalry between Magic Johnson of the Lakers and Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics.

For NFL fans, “Hard Knocks” feels like the unofficial start to the season. The games that matter are still a month away, but training camp has begun in earnest, and the show offers a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the franchise chosen for the year. This season, “Hard Knocks” will feature the New York Jets, with incoming quarterback Aaron Rodgers essentially guaranteed to provide a scintillating storyline each week.

Season 2 premiere of ‘Rap Sh! you | Broadcast August 10

Shawna and Mia have had a long and winding road since high school. Both women have seen their lives take unexpected directions, but when they come together to form their own rap group and attempt to take control of their lives, the results aren’t quite what they expected. In Season 2, Shawna and Mia will have to manage their rise to fame and make a key choice about whether to stay true to themselves or sell themselves to the highest bidder.

‘Abbot Elementary’ Season 2 | Broadcast on August 21 maximum

While kids might not like the encore, “Abbott Elementary” is the perfect way for Max viewers to get into back-to-school mode. The show follows an elementary school in Philadelphia, where conditions are…tough, to say the least. Janine Teagues is determined to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for her students, but she will have to fight against the intransigence of her bosses, peers and students in order to make Abbott Elementary the best school it can be.

Is there a reason you think the world shouldn’t be more magical? Fionna struggles to find justification for how boring life can be and decides to do something about it in this “Adventure Time” spinoff. The characters will feel familiar, but the story will be unique as Fionna and her pet cat Cake explore the Land of Ooo. Come on, grab your friends!
